A pleasant short walk taking in Sheffield General Cemetery, through the Conservation Area and alongside Porter Brook

Route instructions

Route Developer: RL

[1] From the Community Centre, turn right along Cemetery Road and walk uphill, passing the Baptist church on your right. At the junction with Washington Road go straight ahead, walking towards the distinctive church spire.

[2] Cross Cemetery Road, towards the Vine Inn. Look out for the rock climbing boulder in the open space on your right. Take the footpath towards the boulder. After passing the boulder the footpath bends to the left and crosses Montague Street.

[3]  Follow the path straight ahead into the woods with a grassy area on your right. You are now in (A) the old Sheffield General Cemetery.

(A) The cemetery opened in 1836 and at the time was in countryside, away from the growing town of Sheffield. It houses the graves of 87,000 people, the last being buried in 1978. Half the cemetery was then demolished to make space for a green space. This area is now a Conservation Area, and is on the English Heritage Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

Continue along the straight path until you reach the red railings surrounding the tomb of Mark Firth, the steel baron.

[4]  When you reach the tomb, turn right and head downhill. This wide path bends first left and then right. Turn right just before the gatehouse. Follow the curving path. The stream that can be heard on you left is the Porter Brook. After several bends in the path take the stone stairs down to your left. Turn right at the bottom of the stairs and follow the path with the Porter Brook on your left.

[5] Exiting the cemetery turn left onto Pear Street and then immediately right onto Napier Street. Walk along Napier Street passing the offices of Seams and Rensburg Sheppard. At the crossroads follow Napier Street straight on. Walk the full length of Napier Street, at the end turn right back onto Cemetery Road and return to the Community Centre.
