Route instructions

Route Developer: Rob Haslam

[1] From Attercliffe Supertram stop, turn left along Shortridge Street for a short distance to find a path on your left. Follow the path to cross over the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal on a bridge and take the path leading down to the canal. Turn left and walk along the towpath. (Path shared with cyclists, beware).

(A)The Sheffield and Tinsley Canal is four miles long and links Victoria Quays in the city centre with the River Don in Tinsley. It opened in 1814 and was built wide enough to accommodate large sailboats called Yorkshire keels, which transported cargoes from Sheffield to the sea via the Trent and Humber.

[2] Leave the canal at the sign for Bacon Lane, turn left and left again into Worthing Road in front of the Woodbourn Hotel. You can walk on the grass. Opposite Woodbourn Hill you have a choice of routes. You can continue to the traffic lights, cross Woodbourn Road and go straight on into Jessell Street on your right or, if you are feeling adventurous, go left and ascend the slope into the hidden park (B) above. This pleasant open space is quiet and very pretty. Pass through the gap at the far end and turn right. The barrier is about 18 inches high and you have to step over it or squeeze through the gate beside it. Continue to Woodbourn Road and turn right into Jessell Street.

(B) Ripon Street Recreation Ground is managed by Parks and Countryside, part of Sheffield City Council.

[3] Go straight on past the Animal Centre and turn left at the junction into Broad Oaks. Walk to the end.

[4] Cross Staniforth Road, (Take care crossing the road) turn right into Palmer Street then cross Roundel Street. Keep straight ahead onto a path leading back to the canal bridge where you can retrace your steps back to the Attercliffe Supertram stop.
