Route instructions

Starting from Herdings Park tram stop

[1] From the Herdings Park tram terminus turn right along Raeburn Road.

Here you overlook Sheffield, Lumb Valley is in the immediate foreground and parts of the Gleadless Valley Estate built in the 1960s can be seen. Further in the distance are the recognisable shapes of Hullamshire Hospital and Sheffield University’s Arts Tower, and beyond these are the hills of the Don and Rivelin valleys.

[2] Follow Raeburn Road round the bend until you reach Morland Road on your right. Turn right into Morland Road and ascend it as it gently rises and curves ahead of you. Follow the road round for a short distance until you reach a small car parking bay at the top.
Turn right along the short footpath that leads straight towards the twin blue and white patterned tower blocks in Raeburn Place.

Raeburn Place is one of the highest points in south-east Sheffield. The two tower blocks are distinctive landmarks that can be easily seen from a variety of points in Sheffield and in north-east Derbyshire.

[3] Upon reaching the fence that encloses Raeburn Place turn left towards a short parade of shops. Just as you reach this parade, turn right along the paved stone pathway following it as it curves left behind the buildings.
Continue straight ahead for some distance with a fence and hedge on your right whilst the path passes a series of blocks of flats on your left. You are now passing above and behind the Valley Park Community School. Turn down the first footpath on your right and cross the tram tracks. Take care; the crossing is identified as a crossing point. It is pushchair friendly and offers good lines of sight in both directions along the tram tracks.

[4] Continue along the path as it passes the side of the Valley Park Community School. Upon reaching Norton Avenue turn right and walk the short distance to the main entrance of Valley Park Children’s Centre.

Upon leaving the main entrance of the Valley Park Children’s Centre turn right going past the centre’s cycle track towards a lay-by. As soon as you reach this lay-by turn right into Herdings Park. Continue along the footpath towards the tram tracks passing the playing fields on your left.

[5] At the first path branching off towards the playground, turn left and follow it. Do not go as far as the tram tracks. The playground has several items of interest for young children. Continue past the playground curving right towards the main park entrance.

The park entrance gives views over the Lumb Valley which offers a range of footpaths but these are not pushchair friendly. Also ahead of you is the terminus of the 47 and 48 bus routes that cross the city centre and on to Shiregreen in the north-east of the city.

At the park exit turn right along Raeburn Road keeping to the right pavement. The Herdings Park tram stop is in a short distance on your right.
