Starting and finishing from bus stops, this walk follows a route along open fields which give stunning panoramic views, reaching Grenoside Park. The local area of Grenoside is a stone-built Victorian village which retains many original features.

Starts at Cowper Avenue/Owen Close, Sheffield, S16 1AS

Getting there

Starting Point: Bus Stop - Fox Hill (Sheffield), Grimsell Crescent, 27211 (On Cowper Avenue) or Fox Hill (Sheffield), Owen Close, 27124 (On Cowper Avenue).

These stops are serviced by bus number 17, operator First / TM Travel, which runs between Norton Lees and Meadowhall.

Route instructions

Route Developer: DA

[1]  Depending which direction you have come from, walk along Cowper Avenue towards Fox Hill Road (passing Keats Road and Owen Place on the left and Grimsell crescent on the right). At the top of Cowper Avenue turn right along Fox Hill Road.

This is a relatively flat road with open fields on both sides and panoramic views.

[2] When you reach the crossroads with Salt Box Lane carefully cross and carry on straight ahead along Main Street. You will see a large sign for Grenoside. Cross Blacksmith Lane. After a short distance turn right through some green iron gates into Grenoside Park.

[3] Follow the main path as it bends to the right past a bowling green on the right and a grassy BMX track area on the left. At the end of the path you will come to a children’s playground. Turn left back down through the park along a path with an avenue of new trees. Exit through an unusual ‘RADAR’ gate into Brook Lane.

[4] After a few yards along Brook Lane pass Brook Close on your left and then turn right down School Lane. At the bottom of School Lane turn right along the busy Halifax Road. Take the next right turn into Blacksmith Lane. After a short way turn right again up a path leading to a football pitch.

[5] The path then curves to the left, heading uphill and running parallel to Blacksmith Lane. This path takes you back to the children’s playground. This time turn left and exit the park along a short passage to Blacksmith Lane.

[6] Immediately cross using the dropped kerbs, and then turn right along Blacksmith Lane. Turn left when you reach Main Street. Carefully cross Salt Box Lane and continue along Fox Hill. Turn left at Cowper Avenue (there is a sign for the Trans-Pennine Trail pointing you down here).
