Route instructions

Starting from The Furnival, Verdon Street, Sheffield, S3 9QQ

[1] Come out of the centre and turn right along Verdon Street. Bear right to follow Spital Street to the junction with Spital Hill and cross over the pedestrian crossing.

Note the grassy triangle to your left. This is called Caborn’s Corner. The Blue Cedar tree in the centre was planted in 1983 by the Bulgarian Cultural Attaché in memory of Trade Union leader, George Caborn. There is a plaque at the foot of the tree.

[2] Bear left at the bottom of Spital Hill, cross Saville Street using the pedestrian crossings and pass under the Wicker Arch. The arches were built in 1839 to carry the railway into Victoria Station. They contain elaborate coat of arms carved above the footpath arches on both sides.

[3] Look for green plaque on the wall on your left for the start of the Five Weirs Walk. Follow this to the left over the new suspension bridge, keeping an eye out for the giant spiders waiting to jump down on you.
Due to flood damage in 2007, the path to the right towards Blonk Street and the Canal Basin is currently closed. But when this eventually reopens it will provide another short off road walk to add to your itinerary.

Continue along the road, signed Trans-Pennine Trail to Meadowhall, and turn left at the junction. You pass one of the five weirs. Cross the Bailey Bridge over the River Don at the next signpost. There is a notice board on the far side giving the history of the bridge.

[4]  Where the path meets Attercliffe Road, there are a couple seats where you can rest before using public transport.

Alternatively, you may retrace your steps and return to Verdon Street by the same route.
