Route instructions

[1] From Moncrieffe Day Centre, cross Moncrieffe Road and walk up Ryle Road, emerging on to Montgomery Road. Cross Montgomery Road and turn to your left, following the high stone wall round to the right into Machon Bank Road. A few yards up this road, there is an entrance on the right, guarded by wooden posts, into Edge Bank. Follow the path up past attractive stone cottages and over cobbles into Meadow Bank Avenue.

This development of houses, round a private central park, was built in 1890 and designed to encourage a sense of community.

[2] Walk left up the Avenue and out past two gateposts, turning left on to Union Road. Go past the Union pub on the left, cross both Machon Bank Road and Osborne Road (be careful as this is a busy junction), and continue along Union Road past the former site of Nether Edge Hospital on your right. The hospital is now a gated development of houses and apartments.  Keeping the former hospital grounds on your right, cross Union Road and turn right into Lyndhurst Road.

For a shorter walk go straight up Union Road to Brincliffe Edge Road, and turn left, following the main route from this point

[3] Follow Lyndhurst Road up to its junction with Cavendish Road. At the junction take a look back down Lyndhurst, at the fine avenue of trees. Turn left into Cavendish Road, and then left into Chelsea Road. After about 100 yards cross Chelsea Road and enter Chelsea Park.

(A) Chelsea Park was originally known as the Brincliffe Towers Estate. It was donated to the city in 1925 by Alderman Styring in memory of his wife. There are places to sit by the children’s play area.

Cross the park diagonally and upwards to the left. There is a tree carved into an owl on your left. Leave the park at the top left hand corner (with good views back across the city) and cross Brincliffe Edge Road into Brincliffe Woods by the sign that has been erected by the Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group.

[4] Go down a short flight of steps and turn left along the path through the trees. There are fine views to the west of the city through the trees. The path crosses a flight of steps going down further into the wood. Stay on the path parallel with the road and, shortly after the steps, leave the woods again onto Brincliffe Edge Road at a point close to its junction with Oakhill Road.  Cross the road and go down Oakhill Road back towards the city centre. At the bottom of Oakhill Road, turn right on to Byron Road, then left on to Nether Edge Road. Carry on down this road to Nether Edge crossroads. Cross the junction at the lights to the right-hand side of Moncrieffe Road and walk back to the day centre.
