This walk starts at Highfield library on London Road. It takes you through the Botanical Gardens with its famous glass pavilion. The return is through the Sunnybank Nature Reserve.

[1] Turn right as you leave Highfield Library on London Road. Walk along London Road to the junction with Boston Street, turn left, and then cross over Cemetery Road to enter Napier Street.   At the end of Napier Street turn left and immediately right onto a footpath.  Follow the footpath with the Porter Brook on your right.  Just before the footbridge go up the steps on the left.  At the top of the steps turn right.  Follow the curving footpath to the gatehouse.

[2] Go through the gatehouse and take the first road on your left (Stalker Lees Road).  Take the second road on the right (Rosedale Road).  At the main road (Ecclesall Road) turn left as far as the pedestrian crossing. Cross it, then right and left into Thompson Road.    Walk through the ornamental gates into the Botanical Gardens.

The gardens contain 15 garden areas, featuring plants from all over the world. There is also a bear pit.

Follow the large path uphill until you can see the very large glasshouse.  Head for the right-hand end of the glasshouse.

[3]  To the right of the glasshouse is a café and an arched gatehouse.  Go through the gatehouse arch and turn right along the main road.  After passing the traffic lights take the first alleyway on the right (Broomgrove Lane).  Take the first alleyway on the left .(There is a garage door on the corner).  Turn right at the road and then left into the car park of Broomgrove Hall (Sheffield Hallam University).

[4]  Walk through the car park and go to the left of the students’ flats.  At the right hand end of a row of garages turn right and take the path through a gap in the wall.  Take this path across a small yard then around a curve to the left.  You will see the front door to Mundella House on your left.  Follow the curving drive downhill to the road.  Turn left at the road.  At the crossroads turn right into Park Lane.  At the downhill end of Park Lane turn left.  Go past Victoria Road.  At the cross roads turn right into Broomhall Place.  Where the road bends left take the cycle path straight on.  You are now in Sunnybank Nature Reserve.

[5] Follow the curving cycle path down to the main road (Ecclesall Road).  Cross the main road,then left across Summerfield Street, crossing both streets by pedestrian crossings . Walk along Summerfield Street.  Turn left at the Hop and Barley sculptures (commemorating the site of Ward’s brewery) and follow the footpath alongside the stream.  Go under the brick building and take the path straight on towards Lion used cars.  Turn right at the road.  Turn left at the T junction (Napier Street).  Cross Cemetery Road and then cross to the right hand side of Napier Street. Turn right along London Road to return to the library.
