Starts at

Colston Health Centre 10 Bath Row Birmingham B15 1LZ

Route instructions

[1]  Cross Cregoe Street from the Health Centre to use the nearest zebra crossing to cross Bath Row. Turn right along Bath Row, and at the corner, turn left into Granville Street. Keeping on the left side of the street, walk up the street to reach the stairs on the left, which lead down to the canal. Take the stairs down to the canal and on reaching the bottom, turn to the left and walk back under the bridge. Continue along the canal towards the Mailbox.

[2] A short way along, on the left hand, is Waterfront Walk (this leads to the Birmingham Register Office), continue past and go under the next bridge, following the canal to the left. At the base of the bridge, turn left and take the bridge over the canal over to the line of restaurants and the Mailbox. Pass by the Day’s Inn and Tesco, taking the ramp up into the Mailbox. Walk by the BBC Shop on the right and take the escalator down to Level 3.

On the left, underneath the escalator, there is an exhibition, “The Birmingham Photographic Grid”, which shows photographs taken within the “Outer Circle” bus route.

After viewing, continue along the left side of Level 3, and take the escalator down to the ground level and out to the front of the Mailbox. Taking the stairs down to the left, cross over the slip road and walk underneath Suffolk Street Queensway to the zebra crossing and cross into Navigation Street.

Alternative route: (If stairs are difficult, turn to the right and walk along the front of the Mailbox, turn around and walk down the pavement along the slip road, then cross underneath the flyover.)

[3] Continue straight on Navigation Street, cross Hill Street and then cross again to be on the left side of Navigation Street. Follow Navigation Street and turn left into Pinfold Street, walking up the short hill, then turning right into Stephenson Street.

[4] Stay on the left side of Stephenson Street and pass by the Topnotch Health Centre. At the florist “Petals of Piccadilly”, turn left into Piccadilly Arcarde. Look up to see the murals, then continue through to New Street at the top of the arcade. Cross New Street, with Pret a Manger directly in front and turn left, walking to the corner of New Street and Bennett’s Hill and crossing over to the left side of Bennett’s Hill(there is scaffolding on the right side of the street to be avoided). Walk up Bennett’s Hill to Waterloo Street and cross to the right, continuing on Waterloo Street (a right off Bennett’s Hill) and passing by the Council Tax Customer Services office on the right.

[5] Turn left into Temple Row West, walking to the corner with Colmore Row and cross the street to enter St Philip’s Square facing Birmingham Cathedral. This is the Church of England cathedral. From the front of the church, walk along the right side, and take the pavement path which leads out of the square to 43 Temple Row (House of Fraser department store will be on the left along Temple Row).

[6] Walk down Cherry Street (Jessop’s will be on the right) to Corporation Street and cross into Union Street. Walk down Union Street and past the entrance to Boots on the left (an NHS Walk-in Centre is located on the ground floor of this Boots). At the bottom of Union Street (Marks & Spencers is opposite), turn right into the High Street and continue towards the Bullring Shopping Centre.

[7] On reaching the Bullring, turn left to walk down through the open central area between the two wings of the shopping centre. Half way down the central area is a statue in honour of Lord Nelson. Continue along the right side, taking the ramp leading down past Borders bookshop, in order to avoid the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs is St Martin’s in the Bullring church (C of E).

In the church is a help desk (offering help in contacting governments agencies, such as the benefits office, and offering a listening ear) and tea café. The Bullring also has many other places to stop for a cup of tea or coffee.

[8] From the church, turn to the right and continue to the markets. Directly past the church is the Outdoor Market. Turn to the right and walk past the Rag Market and then go left into Gloucester Street. This street runs between the Rag Market and the Indoor Market. On the right side, there is a ramp leading up to the entrance into the Indoor Market. Walk to Upper Dean Street and turn right, walking to the corner with Pershore Street. Cross to the left and then to the right to reach the entrance into the Arcadian Centre. Entering into the Centre, the Chinese Day In Supermarket will be on the right and the small Soya Café on the left. Cross over the open central area and take the stairs up past the fountain to the upper level of the centre. From the stairs continue straight on to Hurst Street, with the bar “Las Iguanas” on the left. On reaching Hurst Street, the National Trust’s “Birmingham’s Back-to-Backs” property will be directly opposite(it is on the corner of Hurst and Inge Street). Turn right into Hurst Street and walk up the left side of the street.

The Hippodrome, the home of the Royal Ballet, is on the left.

[9] Follow Hurst Street to the corner of Smallbrook Queensway and cross over to the other side of the Queensway. Turn to the left and walk to Holloway Circus, passing by the Radisson Hotel. Use the two pelican crossings to cross over Suffolk Street Queensway, and take the path to the front of Cleveland Tower on Holloway Head. Continue up the right side of Holloway Head, past the Lee Bank Business Centre. Holloway Head becomes Bath Row. Walk up Bath Row to the zebra crossing by Granville Street and cross to the corner by Colston Health Centre.
