Route instructions

[1] Leave Alderman Rogers Park at the most southerly corner via footpath alongside school fence to reach Coleshaw road. Cross over this road to go down a footpath straight ahead between the houses to reach a road. Follow this road round to the T-junction with Whitburn Road and you will see Milky Button Park straight ahead. Cross Whitburn Rd, turn right and then left to enter the park via a footpath on the left.

(A) A children’s play area is ahead.

[2] Follow the path alongside the stream through the park, ignoring the first left turn over a bridge. Take the second left turn over a bridge and then turn right to continue following stream. This area is now called Newhall Green Nature Area. The path slopes upwards to reach Tuffley Road. Cross Tuffley Road with care towards the bus stop on the far side and walk into the green grassy area ahead, namely Foxfield Open Space.

[3] Follow the path for some way and at the houses turn right and continue along tarmac within the park behind the houses. (If you decide to take a short cut over the grass, be cautious – there is quite a lot of broken glass lying about). Continue to follow the path bearing left alongside the Tree of Life Centre to Greenbrow Road. Cross this road to enter Crowland Rd which is slightly to the right. At the end of this road continue straight ahead down Gallway Walk.

The next section of the walk may be very muddy if the weather has been wet. It can be avoided by turning left before entering Gallway walk and continuing along Rowarth Road to join the main route near the footbridge over the motorway.

[4] At the top of the steps the way becomes a track which can be very muddy if it has been wet. Pass banks of willow and dogwood as it bends to the left sloping up. Continue on the track over the top of the hill. Stop to admire the excellent views over the surrounding area before descending to exit through a gate onto Rowarth Road. Turn right and continue towards the footbridge over the M56.

[5] Branch to the right on the far side of the motorway and descend into Bleasdale Road. Continue down this road which bends to the left, then straight ahead into Highnam Walk, followed by Maismore Road, continuing in the same direction.

[6] Turn right just before the grassy Portman Walk along a hedge and enter Painswick Park through a black metal kissing gate. Turn left and keep to edge of park and at the low barrier ahead go slightly right to pass through the gap and then turn left onto path that skirts the pond. Ignore the left turn out of the park and continue right pass the pond towards the play area (B). Take the exit on the left with the play area on the right onto Selstead Road.

[7] Cross straight over into Teyhnam Walk opposite. Follow walk onto Kingsgate Road. Turn left and then left again onto a footpath by an electricity sub-station. Follow path round a grassy area and exit left through the gate in black railings. Pass between houses to reach a small shopping area off Port Way.

[8] Turn right to continue along Port Way, cross over using the pedestrian crossing then cross over Stoneacre Road. Turn left down Gritley Walk to Tayfield Road. Turn right past the school and enter Tayfield Park ahead. Keep the play area (C) on the left and follow the path around to the right. Exit park onto Port Way and take controlled crossing into Black Path.

[9] Pass a school on the left and where the path meets a road turn left through a curved metal barrier. Follow the continuation of Black Path to reach Culmere Road and the Woodhouse Park (D). Walk through park to exit at the left hand corner onto Culmere Road. At the t-junction with Austell Road turn left. Follow this road as it bends to the right to reach Port Way. Cross Port Way and take the right hand footpath (Ashmoor Walk) ahead.

[10] The path continues for some distance between high fences to reach Threapwood Road. Turn right and follow road as it bends to the left past the pond. Then enter Big Wood (E) on the left just before wooden railing and a sign for the wood. Path leads through wood to exit onto Simonsway.

[11] Turn right and cross Simonsway at the island. Take care here as you are on a combined cycle/pedestrian path along Simonsway. Turn back left before shortly turning right into Peel Hall Road. Continue along this road to reach Peel Hall Park on the right.

Notes

If the weather has been wet you will need footwear suitable for a muddy path unless you take the alternative route along a road.

There are a number of play areas for children along the way but do watch out for broken glass on the paths.

There are some shops on Port Way.
