Walking to School
Walking to school is a great way to build physical activity into a child’s day. It’s good exercise, it’s sociable, it builds up their fitness for other walks, and it reduces pollution and the congestion of the ‘school run’. It’s even been shown to help children learn better and pay more attention in class.
Ask the school or the local authority about walking to school. They might know about:
- Safe routes to school
- School travel plans
- Walk Once a Week (WoW)
- Walk to School badges
- Walk to School week and International Walk to School Month
- Walk Together and Walking buses – where supervised groups of children walk to school on a set route
There are lots more resources for parents/carers, for schools and for school students themselves at www.walktoschool.org.uk.
