Walking Posture and Technique

One great thing about walking is we don’t have to be taught to do it! But some of us could benefit even more from walking by improving our technique. If you don’t feel comfortable when walking, try the following tips:

CHECK YOUR POSTURE:

  • Stand up straight but relaxed, with your eyes ahead.
  • Swing your arms in time to your stride.
  • Breathe deeply, in rhythm with your steps if you can.

Also…

  • If carrying a backpack, adjust the straps so they hold the pack snugly high on your back and use the hip belt if provided.
  • Start slowly to warm up your muscles, and after a few minutes gradually increase your speed. Slow down again just before the end of your walk to “cool down”.
