A short urban ‘figure of eight’ walk, exploring the local area. This walk can made shorter by missing out particular loops.

Starts at Pakistani Muslim Centre Building, Woodbourn Road, Darnall, Sheffield, S9 3LQ (corner of Woodbourn Road and Jessel Street).

Route instructions

Route Developer: Terry Howard

[1] Cross over Woodbourn Road and the tram tracks by the traffic lights to enter Worthing Road opposite. There is an open space to the right of the road and it is possible to walk on this providing you rejoin Worthing Road lower down. Alternatively, you can remain on the pavement on the left hand side of the road and cross to the right hand side when you reach the Woodbourne Hotel.

[2] At the Woodbourne Hotel turn right into Bacon Lane, opposite and cross Bacon Lane Bridge (take care – the bridge is narrow and there is no footpath). At the end of the road cross over Effingham Road ahead to enter Stoke Street opposite.

[3] Follow Stoke Street on its left hand pavement for a short distance, then take the path on the left which overlooks the River Don. When the path meets Attercliffe Road, turn left over Washford Bridge. Once across the bridge, take the access path immediately on your left (through the arch) down to the Five Weirs Walk.

[4] Continue ahead along the path, passing the large wood carving of a salmon (this area is known as Salmon Pastures). As you go down this section, it is possible to take a slight diversion to the right into a wildlife area. Make sure you re-join the main riverside path. The path then leaves the river soon after Niagara Weir and exits onto Warren Street.

[5] Turn left along the road to the traffic lights, then cross over Leveson Street and pass under the railway arch continuing along the riverside path of the Five Weirs Walk. Cross the steel Bailey Bridge, to exit left onto Effingham Street.

[6] Cross over the road, passing in front of Waverley House on the corner, and and turn left along Effingham Road, under the railway bridge and on towards the traffic island.

[7] Cross over Effingham Road before the traffic island, and at the junction turn right up Bernard Road. Cross this road and take the first left onto Lumley Street (may be unsigned). Enter Lumley Street and after about 100 metres look out for some steps to the left down to the canal towpath (Take care: some steps are missing). Turn right along the canal path and continue, passing under Bacon Lane Bridge, (near Waypoint 2), then under a further seven bridges (note: the three next to the last one are very close together and look like one).

[8] As you emerge from the last bridge (which carries a railway), continue along the canal a short distance but look out for a path coming down from the right over an open space.

[9] Take this path up and continue straight on over the open space until it meets some wrought iron gates onto Shirland Lane. At the road turn right, passing over two bridges to finally cross the canal where you will meet the tram tracks at the traffic lights.

[10] Without crossing the tram tracks, turn left and head for the tram stop. Continue past the tram stop and along the path to take a bridge on your left. This takes you back over the canal and emerges near the corner of Roundell Street and Palmer Street. Turn right along the back of the power tool superstore and down onto Staniforth Road.

[11] Cross at the traffic lights. Turn right then immediately left into Woodbourn Road, crossing the tram tracks, and follow the tram tracks back to the centre.

End: Return to Hillsborough Tram Stop

Route instructions

Route Developer: KP

[1] Starting from Hillsborough tram stop turn into Forbes Road, a short distance from the Rawson Spring Pub and on the same side of the road. Continue ahead into Thoresby Road. At the end of the road, take the footpath which curves gently to the right. Walk the footpath and soon turn right to a short path which will take you to Watersmeet Road. Walk down the road. In a few minutes you will reach the main road (Rivelin Valley Road).Turn left and go up the road. In a minute or two you will see the Fire Station building on your right hand side. Cross the road. A few meters after passing the station you will find a bridge which will take you to the other side of the Rivelin River. After passing the bridge, turn left.

Now relax and enjoy the Rivelin Valley! The river flows for a total of 3.5 miles, before joining the River Loxley.

[2] The river will lead you for the rest of the walk – just follow the path close to the river. When you reach stepping stones turn left and continue with the Rivelin on your left hand side. After a few minutes, the path will take you back to the main road. On your right hand side you will find the Hollins Lane Bridge. Cross the bridge and immediately after the bridge cross Hollins Lane and continue your walk on the ‘Easy going trail’ footpath.

The footpath will take you to the ‘Rivelin Park Cafe’ (open Mon-Sun, 9am – 5pm) where the first part of your walk ends.

[3] Enjoy the cafe and playground behind it. You can extend your walk from here if you want –an information board at the cafe will help you to find further attractions. When you are ready to return, take the same footpath back. (As you already walked the path one way, the instructions for the return are less detailed). When leaving the cafe walk with the Rivelin on your right hand side. Cross the Hollins Lane bridge and turn left after the bridge.

[4] After a few metres, on your left hand side you will find the footpath which will lead you back to the river. When you reach a bridge near the main road , cross the bridge and turn left. Near the fire station cross the road. After few minutes turn right to Watersmeet Road. At the end of the road turn right and then immediately left on to the footpath which will take you to Thoresby Road. Retrace your steps back to the Hillsborough tram stop where your walk ends.

Starts at The Furnival, Verdon Street, Sheffield, S3 9QQ

Route instructions

[1] Come out of the centre and turn left along Verdon Street then at the end turn left.

[2] Take the path immediately beyond the barrier through the grassy area with seats past the houses and go down a short flight of steps to cross the end of a cul de sac. Continue below the wall through two sets of barriers and enter the children’s playground.
Go through the gate at the far side and turn right. This is not a tarmac path, but is suitable for pushchairs.

[3] Cross over into Pye Bank Road, but beyond the wall on your left switch to Pitsmoor Road and follow the left-hand pavement.

There are excellent views across the city from here and you can see the ski lift going up Parkwood Springs, one of the seven Sheffield hills.

Opposite a long flight of steps, branch left across the open green space and enter the trees. Go straight on over a cross path alongside Stanley Tools and turn right when you reach Woodside Lane (Take care as there is no pavement!).

[4] Turn left back onto Pitsmoor Road. Cross over with care and turn right just after the church along Christ Church Road, which has 20 mph speed restriction signs. Cross Burngreave Road at the pedestrian crossing, turn right then left into Melrose Road.

To the left at the end is (A) Burngreave Cemetery, which lays claim to being the largest open space in Burngreave, and yet is the most densely populated!! The central bell tower with the needle spire linked two chapels – one for Church of England burials, the other for everyone else. The Pitsmoor Adventure Playground is in front, but be aware the minimum age is for children over five. It has limited opening times.

[5] Go down to the bottom of the hill, cross Burngreave Road at the pedestrian crossing and go left. Turn right just past the car wash up Kilton Hill, cross Andover Street and continue along Montfort Drive. At the end of Montfort Drive continue straight ahead along the pedestrian path, coming out onto Verdon Street. Bear right to cross at the safe crossing point and back to the centre.

Starts at The Furnival, Verdon Street, Sheffield, S3 9QQ

Route instructions

Route Developer/Checker: Rob Haslem

[1] Turn right along Verdon Street, left into Spital Street and then right into Brunswick Road. As you turn right, note the blue cycle route signpost to the city centre. You will be following these signs all the way to the river.

[2] Go down this traffic-free road and pass under the railway. Go over the two pedestrian crossings on your left (Savile Street) and turn right to cross the next two pedestrian crossings over Derek Dooley Way. Continue straight ahead along Johnson Street following the blue city centre signs.

[3] At the end turn left along Nursery Street, cross the pedestrian crossing and the bridge over the River Don and turn right along the Upper Don Trail.

[4] Pass two information panels and cross Corporation Street at the traffic lights before continuing along the trail to the right of Tesco Express. Note the painting on the pub wall.

[5] Go left then right into Kelham Square and continue on the cobbled road to Kelham Island Museum.

(A) Kelham Island was formed about 1100 when a stream was created off the main river to serve a corn mill near Lady’s Bridge. A workshop was built on the island by a man called Kellam Homer in the 1600s. When an iron foundry was built in 1829 the name had changed to Kelham. The museum opened in 1982 and is mainly dedicated to steelmaking and Sheffield’s industrial past. There is also a transport section. There is an interactive play zone for children aged 2 – 9 years, but parties must book in advance. There is a charge for adults to enter the museum but children get in free. Entrance to the café is free. It is closed on Friday and Saturday. Even if you don’t plan to look round it is worth visiting the entrance to look at the huge Bessemer Converter.

[6] Retrace your steps and turn right over the goit to Alma Street.

Opposite is the old Globe Steel Works. To your right is Kelham Island Brewery with the (B) Fat Cat pubbeyond. Multi-award winning ales have been brewed here since 1990 and it is now Sheffield’s largest brewery. The Fat Cat has painted lines showing flood levels in 2007 and 1864.

Go back along Alma Street and turn left through the archway back through Central Quay and along the river. Turn left along Corporation Street over the bridge.

[7] Cross Mowbray Street at the pedestrian crossing and ascend past the car wash to the traffic lights. Turn right and right again at the barrier. This improved path isn’t tarmac but is suitable for pushchairs.

[8] Bear left through the children’s playground, which has seats, and continue along the tarmac path through the barriers. Cross the cul de sac and up a short flight of steps to meet the road at a metal barrier (or short cut up the grass). Return along Verdon Street to The Furnival.

Starts at Highfield Library, London Road, Sheffield, S2 4NF

Route instructions

Route Developer: Robin Segulem

Starting from Highfields Library

[1] Come out of the library and turn right along London Road. Cross London Road and continue along the other side. Cross Grosvenor Square and then turn next left into Clarke Square. Walk along Clarke Square to the junction with Sharrow Street. Cross Sharrow Street and head along Salmon Street opposite. At the end of the street cross over Club Garden Road and then turn left along it.

[2] When you reach Sharrow Lane turn right to reach Washington Road. Cross Washington Road using the pedestrian crossing, and then turn right along it. Cross Mackenzie Street and Pearl Street, eventually coming to the junction with Cemetery Road.

[3] Cross Cemetery Road using the pedestrian crossing and then turn left towards Montague Street. Turn right along Montague Street to the cemetery entrance on your left. If you look to the right you will see a large ‘climbing boulder’ sculpture. Go through the entrance into Sheffield General Cemetery.

The cemetery opened in 1836 and at the time was in countryside, away from the growing town of Sheffield. It houses the graves of 87,000 people, the last being buried in 1978. Half the cemetery was then demolished to make space for a green space. This area is now a Conservation Area, and is on the English Heritage Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

[4] Follow the gravel path on the left which goes up through the trees and then runs parallel with Cemetery Road beyond the wall. On reaching the Anglican Chapel with the spire, pause to have a look at the information board.

The chapel was built in 1848 for the Anglican community. Further along was the burial ground for non-conformists.

[5] At the chapel turn left out of the cemetery and back out onto Cemetery Road. Cross straight ahead to walk along Grange Road. At the junction with Grange Crescent turn left and follow the road around to Sharrow Lane. Turn left along Sharrow Lane, crossing Washington Road at the pedestrian crossing. Upon reaching London Road turn right and cross to return to the library.

Starts at Somalian Community Association 30 Burngreave Road, Sheffield, S3 9DD

Route instructions

The first half mile of this walk it a long ascent using pedestrian pavements with a short steeper climb up to Parkwood Springs. The full route does mean crossing some busy roads that do not have any pedestrian controlled crossings. The walk can be cut to just over a mile. Also the 33 bus route can take you from the Somali Centre to Shirecliffe Road pedestrian entrance to Parkwood Springs.

Route Developer: Robin Segulem

Starting from the Somali Association

[1] Turn out of the Somali Centre and turn right onto Burngreave Road. Continue up the road past the imposing St Catherine’s Catholic Church, until you come to the traffic lights at the main Burngreave and Barnsley Road junction.

Just to your right is an entrance into the small pleasant Abbeyfield Park.

[2] Cross at the lights to the Pitsmoor post office/convenience store and turn left. Then, just past the post office, turn right into Shirecliffe Lane which is quite steep. Cross here so that you can use the pavement. Walk along Shirecliffe Lane until you are opposite Shirecliffe Crescent on your right. Cross here and continue until you reach Shirecliffe Road by the Diplomats Lodge hotel.

[3] Turn right and walk a short distance before crossing by a bus shelter. Turn right again and follow the road until you reach the main pedestrian entrance to Parkwood Springs open space on your left. Go through the narrow pedestrian gate and take the ‘easy going’ main gravel path straight ahead. Follow this tree-shaded path as it winds its way. There are benches at regular intervals.

[4] On reaching a ‘crossroads’ of gravel paths, continue straight ahead until you reach a definite T-junction. Turn left along the path that follows the edge of the hill. From here you will see superb views.Stay on the path, as it passes the top end of Parkwood Springs ski chair-lift on your right, and turn left at the next T-junction. Head across the open grass area, sometimes used for football, until you reach the asphalted space by the main vehicle park entrance. Cross this space and take the narrow path to your left, which will take you back to the pedestrian entrance and back onto Shirecliffe Road.

For a shorter walk, go back down Shirecliffe Lane and onto Burngreave Road. Alternatively you can take the 33 bus, from outside the Diplomats Lodge hotel, back to Burngreave Road. You can also catch this number bus to the park from outside the centre, again getting off at the hotel.

[5] Turn right and head downhill - taking in the superb view of the city centre. Cross at the traffic lights at the end, taking care as these are not pedestrian controlled, and turn left. Follow the road round past the Ivy Lodge Clinic on your right to another set of traffic lights. Cross here, again taking care as these are not pedestrian controlled.

[6] Turn right along Pitsmoor Road and within a short distance you will come to a road junction on your left at Christ Church. Turn left here to go up Nottingham Street past the church on your right. Continue up Nottingham Street and cross where the road narrows, just after the turning into Rising Street, and take the entrance into the small park on your left.

[7] Take the footpath to your left, running parallel to the road and passing a children’s playground and picnic area on your right, to exit back out onto Nottingham Street. Cross the road, turn right and continue until you reach a crossroad with the, currently closed, Rock House pub on your right. Cross Rock Street and immediately turn left down Catherine Street to Burngreave Road. Using the pedestrian crossing, cross Burngreave Road and turn right to head back towards the centre.

Go past Grosvenor Square and take the next left in to Clarke Square. Carry on up Clarke Square until you arrive at Sharrow Street. Cross Sharrow Street to Salmon Street and begin to go up the street.

[2] At the top of Salmon Street you reach Club Garden Road, cross it and turn left. Follow Club Garden Road until you get to Sharrow Lane were you turn right and follow the lane until you reach the next right which is Washington Road, turn up it.
Montague Street marks the boundary of the Walled General Cemetery. As you enter the Cemetery take care to notice the “Climbing Boulder” sculpture on the right.

[4] On entry to the Cemetery follow the gravel path on the left that goes up through the trees, running parallel to Cemetery Road which is on the other side of the wall. Follow this path until you reach the “Spired” Anglican Chapel were an information board can be found.

The Anglican Chapel was built in 1848 for Sheffield’s Anglican community.

Turn right at the Chapel following the main path down to the gate house. The ground you are walking through is the burial ground for non-conformists created in 1836 and if you look to the left you will see the classic style of the Non-Conformist Chapel built in 1836.

Starts at Gresley Road Community Centre, Gresley Road, Lowedges, Sheffield S8 7HL

Route instructions

Route Developer: DA

[1] Leave the centre, turn left and walk down Gresley Road. Take the tarmac path to the left, next to a sign on the side of a house indicating ‘133-181 Gresley Road’. Bear to the right along this path with houses on your right and the boundary fence to the golf course on your left. Ignore a path that comes in from the right. Carry on straight ahead towards a cul-de-sac. Walk through the cul-de-sac (Boland Road) and turn left into Dore and Totley Golf Course.

(Caution: Although the walk goes along public footpaths across the course, still take care when walking close to the tees and fairways. Some of the paths may be muddy too, so watch your step!)

[2] You’ll pass a footpath sign and enter through an iron gate. Once on the course, go straight on across the course, between the tees to holes 2 and 4, until you come to a post as you enter some scrub land. Follow the path straight on and down a slope. At the next footpath sign turn right up a gully with a burn (a small stream), heading for a white post ahead.

(Caution: Watch out for golf balls flying through the air!)

[3] Pass the white post and make for two more white posts up ahead. Pass the next white post and continue straight on, walking to the right of the burn. As the gully opens out go past another white post and head slightly right of another at the start of an avenue of low trees. At the end of the tree-lined path turn right and exit the golf course through the narrow access point.

[4] Go down the lane you exit into until you come to Greenhill Parkway, with Bradway Road opposite. Turn right along Greenhill Parkway. Walk past South Sheffield Evangelical Church and then the Fire Station. Immediately turn right along Lowedges Road. Turn right along Boland Road. At a sign on the side of a house reading ‘Boland Road 31-45, 45A’ turn right into a cul-de-sac.

[5] Ignore the path to the right (this is the path you came along on the outward route) and carry straight on. Enter Greenhill Park by a gap in the fence to the right by a lamppost. Go towards the children’s play area and then head left along the path to the main park gates. At the gates turn left, then right at Gresley Road to return to the centre.

Route instructions

Route Developer: DA

[1] Leave the centre and turn left, and then immediately left again around the side of the building. Enter Greenhill Park and take the main tarmac path to the left. Pass another entrance to the park, but carry on along the path towards the Bowling Green. Continue on the same path, passing to the left of the bowling green, ignoring a path that joins from the right.

[2] The path curves to the left, running parallel to the dual carriageway outside the end of the park. Soon the path comes to a t-junction. Turn left here towards the housing estate. Once out of the park turn immediately left to take a path to the left of the houses. This curves back roughly in the same direction you came from.

[3] Re-enter Greenhill Park when you come to a gate with brick gate posts. Follow the path straight on, crossing the path you walked along previously. This time you pass to the right of the bowling green. The path also goes past the ‘Wheels Park’ on your right. The path then comes to a t-junction. Turn right here to follow the path around the edge of the park.

[4] Go past the children’s play area to your left – there is a golf course beyond this. Keep along the path until you come to the same park entrance you originally entered through. Turn right on Gresley Road to return to the centre.
