According to the forestry commission 13% of British land is made up of Woodland areas. This statistic also includes smaller and urban wooded areas in towns and cities across Great Britain.

These woodlands make the perfect setting for a short walk, whether you live in the city, town or the countryside so why not explore areas near you? You can take part in wildlife spotting, find activities for children, take a picnic or just enjoy the peaceful setting and unwind.

The Visit Woods website is a great source of information if you are planning to take a walk in the woods.

If you’ve been enjoying following the Get Walking Keep Walking 12 week walking plan and don’t want to lose your momentum then why not join a regular led walk?

NHS Manchester’s Physical Activity Referral Service (PARS) run weekly health walks across Manchester to help you get more active more often. A health walk is “a purposeful, brisk walk undertaken on a regular basis”. They normally last between 30mins – 1 hour and are led by trained walk leaders. The walks are free and everyone is welcome!

Taking part in the weekly walks provide an opportunity to socialise and an opportunity to explore local green spaces. Taking part can also:

Make you feel good

Give you more energy

Help to manage your weight

Reduce stress and help you sleep better

Keep your heart ‘strong’ and reduce blood pressure

PARS also have beginner’s walks, indoor walks and Nordic Walking opportunities. To find out where and when walks are held or for more information call Beth Sutcliffe (Health Walks Development Officer) on 0161 230 1857, email beth.sutcliffe@manchester.nhs.uk or visit www.gettingmanchestermoving.org and click on the walking section.

Get Walking Keep Walking in Manchester works! It encourages people to do more walking, it improves participants mental wellbeing and it has also benefitted a great number of people of all ages and from all backgrounds across the city.

Get Walking Keep Walking has just released its third year report showing just how much the project has achieved in Manchester over since 2008. Incredibly, over 8000 people have taken part in the project (26% of those taking part in led walks and 74% receiving walking packs and pedometers) and the project continues to grow. Below are a few facts and figures from the report:

Diversity

The report found that 27% of beneficiaries are male

The majority of participants are from non-white backgrounds; 45% of Manchester beneficiaries are from a BME background compared to the city population of 23%.

Children and Young People

GWKW Manchester has worked with a lot of young people, with 20% of participants aged 25-34. Through its children’s programme the project has also worked with 1,240 children.

Wellbeing

Overwhelmingly, beneficiaries reported that as a result of participating in GWKW they were more likely to feel happy, engaged, energised and motivated. They also said they were less likely to feel lonely and depressed as a result of walking.

Keep Walking

On average, beneficiaries were more active after participating in GWKW Manchester with participants reporting that they walked on average of 1.4 days more a week.

Also the study found that participants walked 63.4 minutes more per week from place to place and 69.3 minutes more for leisure.
