Get Walking Sheffield Showcase Event

On Friday 10th December we held a Get Walking Keep Walking Sheffield Showcase event at the Circle on Rockingham Lane to promote the acheivements of the project in the last 3 years and to present our recent evaluation report.

The event was well attended by a mixture of public health / walking practitioners and Ramblers volunteers. 11 Sheffield Get Walking Keep Walking volunteers were at the event and helped with both the practical organisation and sharing their experiences of volunteering. Our volunteers Craig and Rob led walks along the Moor, to the Wild Planet photography exhibition and then on to the Winter Gardens. Steve one of our Volunteer Walking Ambassadors gave a talk while we were there about how volunteering for GWKW had helped him to start to take more exercise and eventually take up running. One of our partners John Johnson from S.P.A.C.E.S (who support people with enduring mental health problems to build sustainable coping strategies) spoke about how Get Walking had benefited their clients.
Terry Howard, from Sheffield Ramblers, emphasised the impact that project staff have had, helping to reach people that the Group
otherwise wouldn’t be able to and, among other things, linking beneficiaries into the Sheffield Group’s Walking Out programme. He shared his vision of the Ramblers needing to be relevant to everyone, and ‘not a 15 mile heads down and we’re off organisation’.

Sheffield’s Deputy Director for Public Health, Paul Redgrave, outlined some of the impacts of the recent public health white paper, which sees his role move from the PCT to the Local Authority. He was positive about the future of public health, highlighting that it is rising up the agenda in decision makers consciousness and as a result of the white paper has a ring-fenced budget.

Helen Judge (Get Walking Keep Walking Sheffield Project Coordinator)highlighted the range of organisations that they’ve worked with, and the impact they’ve had on people’s lives.

We would like to thank everyone who attended and contirbuted to make the event a sucess – especially all our volunteers. THANK YOU!
