Celebrating International Women’s Day

The Get Walking team in Birmingham were invited to celebrate International Women’s Day by Including Women, an organisation in Birmingham providing information and support to women in the local area. The event was held at St Mary’s Church in Balsall Heath. International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday; what a great idea!

The day, titled “Women Making a Difference” included women from all walks of life doing non traditional jobs. This  included a female DCI from West Midlands Police, a female firefighter and the Director of Muslim Voices who all spoke about the barriers they overcame to succeed in their various professions.

The GWKW team used this opportunity to give out the Get Walking packs with step counters which went down a treat with a lot of the women; we also set up potential new walking groups to start in May, so all in all it was a very productive day, facilitated by inspirational women!
